Why more moms are choosing weed over wine
Mothers who enjoy cannabis are not bad moms - full stop
It’s no secret that motherhood comes with the immense pressure to ‘have-it-all’ (or at least create the illusion you do). While all parents carry a heavy load, mothers typically take on more than their fair share of the work, childcare, and household demands. Now that recreational cannabis is now legal in Canada, more parents are indulging in cannabis as a way to unwind from the stresses of parenthood.
Ditching Pinot for Pot
Is weed mom the new wine mom? Who cares! Being a mother is hard enough without pitting ourselves against each other. Cheers to the wine moms, they did a lot to tackle the stigma around expectations that mothers were supposed to be the models of sobriety and perfection. What isn’t cool is how harshly parents are judged for using cannabis, especially when using alcohol is such an accepted way to relax.
If wine mom culture taught us anything, it’s that women want and deserve self-care. If you find the idea of embracing the power of the (cannabis) flower taboo just remember, most people don’t bat an eye about indulging in a glass of wine after a long day. Of course, just like with alcohol, cannabis products should be kept secure and away from children. Whether you are ditching pinot for pot, or sticking with old faithful, obviously everything in moderation.
As cannabis becomes more normalized we understand that there is no ‘one type’ of person who likes weed. Women are claiming their space as consumers, showing that cannabis culture isn’t all bong rips and munchies. It seems that whether indulging in a much deserved girls weekend, or simply watching paw patrol for the hundredth time, cannabis could just be mommy’s new little helper.
Smoke-less ways to indulge
It’s a misconception that you have to ‘smoke weed’ in order to enjoy cannabis. Products are more nuanced than ever before, with a wide variety of brands and consumption methods to choose from. There are even non-psychoactive ways to enjoy cannabis such as CBD oils, which may help manage pain, anxiety, and regulating sleep cycles.
Some consumers enjoy the ease of a perfectly crafted pre-rolled joint, while others prefer to add cannabis oil into their food and drink. If the smell of cannabis conjures up the ghost of your stoner ex from university, or you simply prefer a smoke-free alternative, most cannabis retail stores have products like edibles, oils, beverages, and vape pens.
It’s Weed O’Clock Somewhere
Look, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a professional, family focused mother who likes to get high every now and again (in a safe and responsible way). Parenthood can be a minefield of surprises and judgement - a lot of that pressure to be a perfect mother comes from within. Whether you fancy yourself to be a weed mom or a wine mom, it’s all about nurturing your ‘me-time’ outside of motherhood.
Stereotypes and misinformation about cannabis can make it difficult for moms who enjoy weed to be open and honest about their consumption. There is freedom in drowning out the noise of other people’s opinions and just do you. Being open about enjoying cannabis as a parent can be an act of liberation. At the heart of the ‘weed mom’ movement is a message of empowerment and giving ourselves permission to not care about what people think.
